Profile & Challenge
Transformation, modernization and innovation are at the forefront of KFC’s directives, and they were looking for a technology partner to jump start their journey. This journey comprised the following:
- Transformation and optimization of the customer’s ordering experience
- Modernizing operational restaurant applications
- Innovating core restaurant services for high availability and functionality
Having more than 4,000 restaurants in the U.S., KFC needed solutions that would scale, enable flexibility for slow rollouts, and work with a new point-of-sale system. These solutions would also need to work in cases where restaurants had limited or slow internet connectivity. The challenges were focused on a new kiosk ordering solution, modernizing and expanding in-restaurant operational applications and supporting
SOLUTION & OUTCOME
KFC’s Android kiosk solution transformed the customer’s ordering experience by giving them a new and convenient alternative. GAP provided Android development, UI/UX development and project management to modernize another Yum brand’s kiosk application — from Java and XML to Jetpack Compose — and modified it to work with KFC’s menu and systems. The solution also works with both their legacy and new point-of-sale systems and pin pads to support KFC’s rollout needs. KFC’s kiosk application is currently available in more than half of their U.S.-based restaurants and offers KFC’s customers increased convenience.
A new Edge platform leads the modernization of in-restaurant operational applications and is enabling KFC to retire legacy, single-instance applications with a highly-available Kubernetes-based solution. GAP provided Technology Advisory Services, architecture and development, DevOps and project management to create a solution that provides integration with their new point-of-sale and pin pads, employee authentication and authorization, point-of-sale till management, time clock functionality, order reporting and integration with legacy systems. The flexibility of the Edge system has enabled KFC to provide real-time pricing updates to digital menu boards, real-time order confirmation information on their drive-thrus and enabled experimentation with in-restaurant data feeds. The Edge platform is currently in a limited rollout due to the need for hardware and software infrastructure installations.
Additionally, GAP provided architecture and application assessments for various cloud and mobile applications that support KFC’s restaurants. This entailed assessing the architecture, deployment pipelines and application code for high-availability, cost and support concerns, potential issues, and modernization paths. GAP provided documentation and walk-throughs of their findings and recommendations. The findings and recommendations were well received and KFC is working to integrate those changes.
